• Welcome and project introduction(Overview of the XO Laptop and the One Laptop Per Child program)

RIM Workshop- led by RIM staff, students will learn about Blackberry devices and have the chance to take them apart.

Students will be introduced to the industry mentors and put in teams (4 students to each mentor). Under the guidance of the mentors, students will learn about computer hardware by taking apart towers and the XO’s
11:00 – 11:30am Students will a break for pizza lunch.
11:30 – 2:00pm classes will alternate to RIM workshop and Computer hardware course.
Monday October 26, 2009 - Scratch Workshop
Location: IBM Ottawa Software Lab, Kanata

Students will take part in a full day Scratch workshop where they will learn how to make fun and simple games or other interactive applications.

Students will get an overview of the XO and the XO project
Overview of project:
• The students need to review the docs on the website and understand things to consider when planning and programming their projects.
• The students are to break into teams of two.
• The students are to design Java projects for the XO.
• The only requirement is that the projects are to be designed to be used by children (students can define the age) all over the world and are to have some sort of learning component.
The projects will be evaluated by the partners on:
• Creativity
• Completeness
• Originality
• Engaging/fun
• Usability
- Design (appealing, clean, appropriate)
- Intuitive (easy to use pick up)
- Accessibility (language, learning variations)
A presentation to the students on what life is like for Children in the Third world.
Exploring Education in Developing Countries Presentation by TBC
Chelsey was a volunteer in Ghana, Africa in 2008 and her mission was to research and document educational issues. She also participated in the Uniterra International Seminar. It is an initiative sponsored by both the World University Service of Canada (WUSC) and the Centre for International Studies and Cooperation (CECI) and links 20 Canadian students with 20 students from the global South to conduct research on a specific topic. Her concrete experience in the field and academic understanding of education in Africa is going to be very valuable to your understanding of the constraints of learning in Africa but also of the positive impact that you are making to real-life situations.

Students will break into their assigned teams of two and research the XO, projects from last years students and brainstorm ideas for their XO projects.

Location: Mentors at Garneau High School
Noon – 1:45pm
The industry mentors will come to with the classroom to assist the students with the creation of the program for the XO laptop. Students will work in teams with their assigned mentor. When not in the classroom the mentor will also be able to assist the students via email and online discussion forum, with the project. The project is to be created using Python, or Java (depending on the teachers preference).
• Students will share their project ideas and concepts with their mentors
• They must come up with a concept and a project plan ensuring the scope of the project can be delivered within the time frame
* students will continue to work with the mentors via email and discussion groups to finalize their concepts

9:35am to 12:00pm – Student will get an overview and tour of the: Robotics Lab, Discover Lab, Laser Lab, and Electrical Engineering Communications Lab
12:00pm to 1:00pm Lunch - Students will have lunch in the cafeteria
1:05pm to 1:30pm Viva Lab - Students will be given an overview and tour

8:45-11:30- Visit the Centre for Advanced Studies in Visualization, Simulation & Modeling
This is a $28-million project funded by the Canada Foundation for Innovation, the Ontario Innovation Trust, and industry partners. VSIM’s interdisciplinary researchers— Carleton faculty from Cognitive Science, Psychology, Engineering, and Architecture—work on projects such as virtual reality simulations. VSIM offers unique training opportunities for students, and the project includes 15 partners in industry including CAE Inc. which is a leading provider of integrated training solutions and advanced simulation and controls technologies to civil and military aviation customers. Students will get an overview of the centre and be able to try some of the virtual simulation programs.

12:30-2:00 Visit the School of Information Technology- Interactive Multimedia and Design
Professors from IMD will introduce their program, discussing the unique structure and the broad range of topics covered by the program. Following this introduction, a workshop on optical motion capture will take place, allowing students to participate in the process of capturing live actions and applying them to 3D characters.
