2010-2011 Program Update

Spring 2011: Monsell's grade 4 class at Sir Winston Churchill (SWC) and Mr. Hughes' animation class at Merivale High School (MHS)
Over the last few years OCRI, in partnership with IBM and the Ottawa Software Cluster, has been working on a project designed to encourage enrollment in post-secondary technology programs. At the core of the project are industry experts who serve as mentors and assist the high school students with the programming aspect of their projects. Based on the student, teacher and mentor feedback, we have created a new program for 2010-2011. This year the students will be creating web-enabled educational games.
The high school students will, in teams of two, partner with a small group of Grade 3 students from a “sister school” and create an educational game that is in line with the Grade 3 curriculum. The Grade 3’s become part of the team and their continuous input throughout the development process will be key since they are the subject matter experts and ultimately the clients.
We are very excited about this change to the program, it provides the Grade 3’s with exposure to technology and the art of game creation. Judging by their enthusiasm in the classroom it is safe to assume they think it is very cool to be creating a game with high school students!
